Michael Wynn plays a pull shot
This was Corse & Stauntons first ever U10s match and was played against Dymock C.C. Both clubs have teams playing in the U11s Leadon Vale League, but wanted to give the younger members a chance to play competitive cricket using the Lords Taverners U13 rules. Each side (8-a-side) starts with 200 runs. Players bat in pairs for 4 overs (irrespective of how many times they are out) and score as normal cricket, except that 5 runs get deducted from the total for every wicket lost.

So on a warm sunny evening Corse & Stauntons captain Alex Morgan and Dymocks captain J. Fowke strolled out to the wicket to toss up. Dymock won the toss and put Staunton into bat.

Stauntons opening batsmen were Alex Morgan and Andy Tillot (making his debut). S. John opened the bowling for Dymock and got off to a nervous start bowling a few wides, but recovered well to clean bowl young Morgan with his 5th ball. Tillot batted well and used his feet to get forward as often as he could. Both batsmen took some good singles, but then Tillot was run out by an excellent piece of fielding from J. Fowke. The pair put on 22 runs minus 10 runs for the 2 wickets taking the net score to 212.

Mat Brown and Mat Cox were the next pair to face the bowling of J. Fowke and D. Noah. The experienced Mat Brown struggled at first, but then began to time the ball, while young Mat Cox (in his first ever game) was not overawed by the occasion playing a confident off drive to score his first run. 22 yards however was a long way to run for young Mat, as he was run out twice by some good fielding from Dymock. The pair put on 10 runs to take the score to 222. Michael Wynn (another debutante) and Murray Priday were the next pair in to face Dymock's R. Gunning and B. Thrift. Michael was keen to get on with things and scored 3 quick singles, backed up by Murray who scored 1. Neither batsmen lost their wicket, scoring 16 and taking the total on to 238.

The last pair in were Jack Tyrer and Ben Wheeler facing G. Humphries and J. Fowke. Tyrer hit the ball well and Ben played sensibly. The two put on 14 runs to take the final total to 252.

In reply Dymock openers were R. Gunning and Hugh. Mat Cox and Ben Wheeler opened the bowling for Staunton. Young Mat Cox bowled extremely well, regularly turning the ball away from the batsmen and Ben bowled consistently straight and made it difficult for the batsmen to score with Murray Priday in fine form behind the stumps. Dymock had a good start though scoring 13 runs for the loss of no wickets.

D. Smith and G. Humphries were the next pair to face Alex Morgan and Michael Wynn. Alex bowled straight but G. Humphries was in fine form and helped himself to two fine boundaries. The pair put on 18 and didn't lose a wicket taking the score onto 232.

C. Fox and D. Noah then faced Jack Tyrer and Mat Brown. Both bowlers bowled well Mat bowling 3 overs for 6 runs and they kept the pairs score to 7 runs. This was helped by an excellent piece of fielding from Ben Wheeler who kept a cool head to run out D. Noah. Dymock's score was now 234.

The last pair J. Fowke and J. John needed to score 19 runs from 4 overs to win. The pair started off well with Fowke scoring 2 singles and a well struck boundary. But Andy Tillot bowled really well, chipping in with a maiden and conceding just 3 off his second over. This left Dymock needing 5 runs to win off the last over, and the captain Alex Morgan turned to Jack Tyrer to bowl it.
The first ball was a wide, meaning Dymock now needed 3 to win off 5 balls. The next 3 balls were on the mark and no runs were conceded. A single off the penultimate ball meant that Dymock needed 2 to win off the last ball. J. Fowke hit a lovely straight drive, but Michael Wynn fielded very well at mid off and got the ball back to Tyrer who whipped off the bails as Dymock went for the second run giving Staunton a thrilling victory.
